Definition

Vintage-inspired jewellery is new jewellery made to evoke the look and feel of an earlier era, drawing on design languages from periods like Art Deco, Edwardian or Victorian without actually being old. A piece might use milgrain detailing, filigree, rose-cut diamonds or floral motifs that were popular in a particular decade, all crafted with modern techniques and materials. It is a way of getting the romantic or period aesthetic of antique jewellery in a new piece with a known provenance and often at a more predictable price.

Frequently asked questions

Is vintage-inspired jewellery the same as antique jewellery?
No, vintage-inspired means newly made in an older style, while antique and vintage refer to genuinely old pieces. Vintage-inspired is sometimes called estate-style or period-style jewellery, and it is priced as new jewellery, not as a historical piece.
What design elements make jewellery look vintage-inspired?
Milgrain edging, filigree, open metalwork, rose-cut or old-cut diamonds, engraved floral or leaf patterns, and settings like cluster and toi et moi are all strongly associated with period styles and give new pieces a vintage feel.
Why choose vintage-inspired over genuine vintage?
New vintage-inspired pieces come with a known history and fresh metal, making them easier to size, customise and insure. Genuine vintage pieces have character and historical value, but they can need restoration and may be harder to match to current ring sizing.
