What are accent stones?

Definition
Accent stones are the small gems set around or alongside a larger central stone to make it look brighter, bigger and more finished. They might run along the band of an engagement ring, frame the main stone in a halo, or sit as tiny sparkles either side of it. They are usually diamonds, though coloured gems like sapphires are popular too. Accent stones quietly do the supporting work, drawing the eye to the centrepiece without competing with it.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between an accent stone and a centre stone?
- The centre stone is the main event, the largest and most prominent gem in the piece, while accent stones are the smaller stones placed around it to enhance and frame it. One leads, the others support.
- Do accent stones add value to a ring?
- They add to the overall sparkle and the total carat weight, and a well-set row of accent stones lifts how the whole ring looks. Individually the small stones are modest in value, but together they make a real difference.
- What are accent stones usually made of?
- Most often small diamonds, because they add bright, neutral sparkle. Coloured gemstones like sapphires, emeralds and rubies are also popular when you want the accents to add a hint of colour.
