Definition

A chain necklace is a necklace formed from a series of connected metal links or elements, worn on its own or with a pendant. It is the most fundamental form of necklace and comes in dozens of styles: cable, curb, figaro, box and rope chains, among others, each with a different look and feel. Chain necklaces are made in gold, silver, platinum and base metals, and the weight, thickness and link pattern determine how the chain drapes and how formal or casual it reads.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common chain necklace styles?
Cable chains have uniform oval or round links; curb chains have flattened, interlocked links that lie flat; figaro chains alternate smaller and larger links; rope chains have tightly twisted links; and box chains have square links that create a smooth, structured look. Each suits different pendants and personal styles.
What length chain necklace should I choose?
A 40 cm chain sits at the base of the neck as a choker or collar length; 45 cm falls just below the collarbone and is one of the most versatile lengths; 50 cm sits over the chest; and longer lengths from 60 cm downwards work well for layering or for larger pendants. The right length depends on neckline, pendant size and personal preference.
How do I keep a gold chain from tangling?
Store each chain separately, either on a hook or in its own pouch. If it does tangle, lay it flat on a smooth surface and use two pins to gently ease the knot open rather than pulling the ends. Clasping a chain before storing it flat reduces tangling.
