What is custom jewellery?

Definition

Custom jewellery is a piece designed and made specifically for one person, rather than selected from a jeweller's existing collection. The process usually involves a consultation where you discuss the design, choice of metal, gemstones and budget, then the jeweller creates drawings or a computer-rendered design for your approval before anything is made. Custom commissions range from a simple ring with a personalised engraving through to a completely original engagement ring or a piece that incorporates a family stone. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece that fits your brief exactly.

Frequently asked questions

How long does custom jewellery take to make?
It varies by complexity, but a straightforward ring typically takes four to eight weeks from the initial consultation to the finished piece. More complex designs with multiple stones, hand engraving or unusual materials can take longer, and busy periods around Valentine's Day and Christmas mean lead times can extend.
Is custom jewellery more expensive than ready-made?
Usually, yes. You pay for the designer's time, the bespoke process and a piece with no off-cuts or compromises. However, if you have a particular stone, metal type or design in mind that does not exist in standard ranges, custom can sometimes be more economical than trying to find an exact match elsewhere.
Can I use my own stones for custom jewellery?
Most jewellers are happy to work with a client's existing stones, whether family heirlooms, stones from a previous piece or loose gems you have sourced yourself. Having the stone appraised and insured before handing it over is sensible, and it is worth discussing what happens if the stone is accidentally damaged during setting.
