Definition

Damascene is a decorative metalworking technique in which fine gold or silver wires are hammered into the surface of a darker base metal, usually blackened iron or steel, to create intricate patterns or figurative scenes. The technique takes its name from Damascus and has ancient Middle Eastern origins, with distinct regional traditions developing in Spain, particularly Toledo, and Japan. Both Spanish and Japanese damascene jewellery are characterised by warm gold or silver lines against a dark background.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Spanish and Japanese damascene?
Spanish damascene from Toledo typically features bold geometric and Moorish-influenced patterns in gold and silver on dark steel. Japanese damascene, known as zogan, tends to use finer, more detailed work with naturalistic motifs like flowers, birds and landscapes, and the base metals and finishing techniques differ slightly between the two traditions.
Is damascene jewellery valuable?
Antique pieces with fine craftsmanship and complex patterns can be quite valuable as collectibles, particularly signed Japanese damascene from the Meiji and Taisho periods. More recent Spanish tourist-market pieces are generally less so. The value depends on age, quality of work and complexity of design.
How do you care for damascene jewellery?
Keep it dry and away from chemicals, as moisture and cleaning products can lift the inlaid wires or affect the darkened base metal. Wipe gently with a dry cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and never polish damascene with abrasive products, which would damage the surface patina the dark ground depends on.
