What is irradiation treatment in gemstones?

Definition

Irradiation is a treatment applied to gemstones and pearls to alter or enhance their colour by exposing them to controlled radiation, which disrupts the crystal's electron structure and changes the way it absorbs light. Blue topaz, for example, is almost always irradiated, as natural blue topaz is extremely rare, and treated gems are held to strict safety standards before release. The treatment is widely used and considered acceptable in the trade when disclosed, though the effect on some stones can fade over time or with prolonged exposure to strong heat and light.

Frequently asked questions

Which gemstones are commonly treated by irradiation?
Blue topaz is probably the most well-known, with virtually all blue topaz on the market having been irradiated and then heat-treated to stabilise the colour. Yellow, orange and brown diamonds are sometimes irradiated to deepen or change their colour, as are certain sapphires, pearls and other stones. The treatment is disclosed on gemological certificates when detected.
Is irradiated gemstone jewellery safe to wear?
Yes, regulated irradiated gemstones are safe. Treated gems are tested and cleared of any residual radioactivity before they are released for sale, which is a standard part of the commercial treatment process. The levels retained are well within safety limits and pose no health risk.
Does irradiation treatment last permanently?
It depends on the stone and the treatment method. Gamma-irradiated blue topaz is very stable and its colour holds indefinitely under normal conditions. Some irradiated diamonds and sapphires can revert if exposed to very high heat, which is why a jeweller should always be told if a stone has been treated before any repair work involving heat.
