Definition

A peek-a-boo diamond, also called a peekaboo diamond, is a small diamond or gemstone set on the inside of a ring's band, in a cut-out or open window in the metal, so it is hidden from most angles but catches the light and becomes visible when the ring is viewed from the underside or tilted at a certain angle. It is a playful, unexpected detail that adds a private sparkle the wearer knows is there even when nobody else can see it.

Frequently asked questions

Where is a peek-a-boo diamond set?
It sits in the inner surface of the ring shank, usually in a small cut-out or gallery opening in the metal, so the stone faces inward toward the palm. From above the ring it looks like a regular piece; the diamond only reveals itself from specific angles.
Does a peek-a-boo diamond affect comfort?
In most cases, no. Well-made peek-a-boo settings sit flush with or slightly recessed into the band so nothing protrudes against the finger. A quality jeweller will ensure the stone is secure and not uncomfortable to wear.
Can any small gemstone be used as a peek-a-boo stone?
Yes, while diamonds are most common, any small gem can be used. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds and birthstones all work well, and the choice can add a personal touch, matching a birthstone or complementing the main stone.
