What is a hidden halo engagement ring?

Definition

A hidden halo is a ring of small accent stones set just below the girdle of the centre stone, tucked into the base of the setting so they are invisible from above but visible from the side. From the top the ring reads like a clean solitaire, while looking in from the profile reveals that extra sparkle sitting beneath the stone. The effect makes the centre stone appear to float with a soft glow around it, and it adds brilliance without the visual weight of a full raised halo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hidden halo and a regular halo?
A regular halo sits at the same level as the centre stone, surrounding it in a visible ring of smaller diamonds that can be seen clearly from above. A hidden halo is tucked underneath the stone, so it is only visible from the side and does not change the clean silhouette of the ring when viewed from above.
Does a hidden halo make the centre stone look bigger?
It has a subtler effect than a standard halo but it does add a glow and some perceived depth. The main appeal is the extra sparkle from the side and the way the light bounces around the base of the stone rather than a dramatic increase in the stone's visible size.
Is a hidden halo harder to clean than a standard setting?
The small stones underneath the centre stone can trap lotion, soap and dust more readily because the gap is less accessible, so it is worth cleaning the ring regularly with a soft brush and warm soapy water, paying attention to the underside of the setting.
