What is smoky quartz?
By Jared James · Last updated 21 May 2026
Definition
Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz that ranges in colour from a pale, cloudy grey-brown through to a deep, nearly black shade, with its colour caused by natural irradiation and the presence of aluminium impurities in the crystal. It is also known by the name cairngorm after the Scottish mountains where fine specimens have been found. Hard-wearing, widely available and pleasingly earthy in tone, it is popular for faceted rings, pendants and earrings, and carries associations with grounding and clarity.
Frequently asked questions
- Is smoky quartz the same as smoky topaz?
- No, they are different minerals, though the names are sometimes confused. Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz, while topaz is a separate mineral. Some sellers historically called smoky quartz smoky topaz, but this is inaccurate and is increasingly avoided in reputable jewellery.
- What does smoky quartz symbolise?
- Smoky quartz is traditionally associated with grounding, calm and the clearing of negative energy. Many people wear it as a stabilising stone, and it has a long history of use in protective amulets.
- Can smoky quartz be worn every day?
- Yes, with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale it is durable enough for rings, bracelets and pendants. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can slowly fade its colour, and clean it gently with warm soapy water.
