When should you not wear a diamond ring?

Three categories of situation account for most ring damage or loss. Water immersion in pools, hot tubs and the ocean lifts the ring off shrunken fingers and exposes it to chlorine or salt at the same time. Heavy hand work (gym, gardening, moving, climbing, cooking with raw meat) takes constant low-grade impact and grinds dirt into the setting. Sleep is the underrated one: turning over against pillows and sheets for eight hours bends pave prongs faster than any single waking activity, and the cumulative wear on a high-set ring is the most common reason halos need re-tipping. Across all three categories, taking the ring off briefly is cheaper than the repair the wear would otherwise need.

The simplest way to build a reliable take-off habit is to have one or two dedicated ring spots, never more. A small dish by the kitchen sink covers most cooking, cleaning and gardening removals. A second dish on the bedside table covers showering and sleeping. Both spots should be away from drains, away from the edge of any surface and somewhere you walk past every day. Avoid pockets, the rim of a basin and any spot you have to think about. Travel adds the extra step of a small soft pouch in the toiletry bag, since hotel bathroom counters are the single highest-loss environment for engagement rings. The habit matters more than the location, but the location is what makes the habit possible.
