A peg head setting is a prong-style head for holding a centre stone that is manufactured as a separate component with a small metal peg at its base, which is then fitted into a drilled hole in the ring band and soldered in place. Jewellers use peg heads because they let almost any band be paired with almost any stone size and prong count, which makes them the most common head construction on solitaire engagement rings. The trade-off is the soldered joint: unlike an integrated head cast as one piece with the band, a peg head has a seam that can fatigue over decades of wear and eventually need re-soldering.
