What is a peg head setting?

A peg head is a separately made stone-setting head with a small locating peg beneath it. The peg fits into an opening in the ring mounting before the head is joined to it, commonly by soldering. The head’s base must meet the mounting properly; the peg is an alignment aid, not a substitute for a well-made joint. “Peg head” describes the attachment, while prongs, a basket or a gallery rail describe features of the head itself.

The peg is only part of the connection
The head’s base and the receiving part of the mounting need suitable contact and alignment. From a finished side view, you may see the connection area, but not its complete internal fit.
Choose the head for the actual stone
A head must suit the stone’s dimensions, outline and setting requirements. Matching only a carat weight or choosing a prong count is not enough. Ask the jeweller to explain the proposed head, how it will attach and what inspection or servicing the completed ring needs.

- Is a peg head setting secure?
- A properly fitted and joined peg head can hold a stone securely. The head-to-band joint and the stone-holding parts both need assessment. Alloy, dimensions, workmanship, wear and impacts matter more than the name alone. If the head or stone moves, or a prong changes position, stop wearing the ring and have it inspected rather than trying to tighten it yourself.
- What is the difference between a peg head and a basket setting?
- They describe different features. A peg head attaches as a separate component through a locating peg. A basket describes a framework beneath the stone, often with rails linking the prongs. One head can be both peg-attached and basket-shaped. Comparing the two names as if they were mutually exclusive does not establish which finished ring is more secure.
- Is an integrated head better than a peg head?
- A head made as one piece with the shank avoids a separate head-to-shank assembly joint. That is a construction difference, not a guarantee of greater durability in every ring. A separate head may offer replacement or component options, but compatibility and the quality of the final joint still need checking. Compare the complete designs and an actual quotation rather than assuming a fixed lifespan or price premium.
