What is a torsade necklace?

Definition

A torsade is a style of necklace made from multiple strands of pearls or beads that are twisted together along their length and gathered at a decorative clasp at the back, creating a thick, rope-like effect. The twist gives the piece texture and movement, and the clasp is usually a substantial piece in its own right, designed to be worn at the side or back of the neck as part of the look. Torsades became particularly fashionable in the Art Deco and mid-20th century periods and remain a statement necklace style associated with elegance and volume.

Frequently asked questions

How is a torsade different from a regular pearl necklace?
A standard pearl necklace is a single strand knotted between each pearl, while a torsade uses multiple strands twisted together into a thick, rope-like form. The visual effect is much bolder and more structured, and the clasp, which holds all the strands together, is a feature rather than something to hide at the back.
Can a torsade be made with beads other than pearls?
Yes, while pearls are the most classic material, torsades are also made with semi-precious stone beads, coral, crystal and seed beads. The twisted multi-strand construction works with any round bead material, and mixed-material torsades combining pearls with turquoise or coral have been popular in various eras.
How do you care for a torsade necklace?
Store a torsade flat or loosely coiled to avoid tangling the strands, and keep it away from perfume and moisture to protect the pearl surface or bead finish. Have the strands and clasp checked periodically by a jeweller, as the multiple strands put more tension on the clasp fittings than a single strand necklace does.
