Why are pave diamonds so cheap?

THE ANSWER

The individual stones are cheap, not the finished ring. Pavé uses melee diamonds. These come from fragments left after cutting larger stones. They're produced in huge quantities. Diamond pricing isn't linear, it's exponential. One 1-carat diamond costs far more than one hundred 0.01-carat stones of the same total weight. The small stones lack rarity. But the labour to set them is expensive. You trade material cost for skilled labour.
