What is 18k gold?

Definition
18k gold is 75% pure gold blended with 25% other metals, which makes it the richest, most golden colour you can get while still being practical to wear. That high gold content gives it a deep warmth lower karats cannot quite match, and it is gentle on sensitive skin because there is less alloy in the mix. The trade-off is that it is softer, so it scratches and scuffs a little more easily, and it costs more than 14k or 9ct gold.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 18k gold worth it?
- If colour and a luxurious feel matter to you, yes; 18k has a noticeably deeper, warmer tone and a higher gold value. It is softer than 14k, so it suits pieces that will not take constant heavy knocks.
- Does 18k gold scratch easily?
- It does scratch more readily than 14k or 9ct because pure gold is soft and 18k has a lot of it. Most marks are light surface scratches a jeweller can polish out, and many people grow to like the soft patina.
- Is 18k gold hypoallergenic?
- It is a good choice for sensitive skin since it is mostly pure gold with only a small amount of alloy. Reactions are uncommon, though they can still happen if the alloy contains nickel.
