What is 24k gold?

Definition
24k gold is pure gold, over 99.95% with no other metals blended in, which gives it that intense, almost orange-yellow colour and the full weight and value people picture when they think of gold. Because nothing has been added to harden it, 24k is very soft and bends, dents and scratches easily, so it is rarely used for rings or bracelets. You will more often see it as bars, coins, and traditional gold jewellery in parts of Asia and the Middle East where pure gold is the custom.
Frequently asked questions
- Why isn't 24k gold used for rings?
- Pure gold is so soft that a 24k ring would bend out of shape and pick up deep scratches within days of normal wear. Jewellers add other metals to lower karats specifically to make them strong enough to last.
- Is 24k gold the best gold?
- It is the purest and most valuable, but best depends on what you need. For investment and pure gold value, 24k wins; for jewellery you will actually wear, a harder alloy like 18k or 14k lasts far better.
- What colour is 24k gold?
- It is a deep, warm yellow with an almost orange richness, noticeably more intense than 18k or 14k, because there are no paler alloy metals diluting the natural colour of gold.
