What is amazonite?

Definition
Amazonite is a semi-precious stone and a variety of potassium feldspar, ranging in colour from soft pastel mint to a vibrant aqua blue-green, sometimes with white streaks running through it. It takes its name from the Amazon River, though most commercial deposits come from Brazil, Russia, Colorado and Madagascar. The colour comes from trace amounts of lead and water in the crystal structure. It is popular in beads, cabochons and carved pendants, and is often associated with calm and courage.
Frequently asked questions
- What does amazonite symbolise?
- Amazonite is often linked with calm, balance and speaking your truth. It has a long history of use as a soothing stone, and was found carved in ancient Egyptian jewellery and scarabs. Many people wear it for its associations with clarity of mind and gentle confidence.
- Is amazonite a durable stone for jewellery?
- It has a hardness of around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and is prone to cleavage, meaning it can chip or split if knocked hard. It suits pendants, earrings and occasional-wear rings better than everyday rings that take regular knocks.
- How do you care for amazonite jewellery?
- Keep it away from harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and prolonged sunlight, which can fade the colour. A soft cloth and gentle warm water is all it needs. Store it separately so harder stones do not scratch its surface.
