What is a point in diamond weight?

A point is one-hundredth of a carat: 1 point equals 0.01 carat, and 100 points equal 1 carat. A 50-point diamond therefore weighs 0.50 carat. Points describe gemstone mass, commonly called weight, rather than width or diameter. Two diamonds with the same point weight can have different visible dimensions because their shapes and proportions differ.

How to convert points to carats
Divide the number of points by 100 to get carats. To convert carats to points, multiply by 100. For example, 30 points equals 0.30 carat, while 1.25 carats equals 125 points.
Point weight is not a diameter
A point-to-carat conversion changes the unit used to describe weight. It does not tell you how wide a diamond will look. Use the individual stone’s millimetre measurements for dimensions, and assess cut quality separately.

- How many points are in one carat?
- There are exactly 100 points in one carat. So a 50-point diamond is half a carat, a 25-point diamond is a quarter carat, and so on. The system makes it easy to describe small fractional weights in a clean, whole number.
- Does a higher point weight mean a larger-looking diamond?
- Not necessarily. Shape and proportions affect visible dimensions, so a higher point weight does not guarantee a larger-looking diamond. Compare the stone’s actual length and width in millimetres as well as its weight; a wide outline alone does not establish good cut quality.
- What does 0.50 carats mean in points?
- 0.50 carats equals 50 points, or half a carat. “Fifty-pointer” is a common shorthand for that weight. It does not specify a diameter: check the individual diamond’s measurements rather than converting points directly to millimetres.
- Is 100 points total weight the same as one 1-carat diamond?
- The combined weight is the same, but it may be spread across several diamonds. A total weight of 100 points is 1.00 carat in all; it does not mean the centre diamond alone weighs 1.00 carat. Check whether a quoted weight describes one stone or the whole piece.
