What is rutilated quartz?

Definition
Rutilated quartz is transparent rock crystal quartz that contains inclusions of rutile, a titanium dioxide mineral that forms as fine metallic needles inside the stone as it grows. Those needles are usually gold to copper-toned, though they can also appear silvery or near-black, and they range from sparse, delicate parallel strands to dense crisscross patterns that fill the stone. In most quartz, inclusions lower the value, but in rutilated quartz they are the entire point; each piece has a completely unique internal landscape, and the effect can look like captured lightning or golden hair suspended in glass.
Frequently asked questions
- What causes the needles in rutilated quartz?
- The needles are crystals of rutile, a mineral rich in titanium oxide, that were already present when the quartz began to form. As the quartz grew around them, the rutile crystals became permanently enclosed inside, and the colour of the needles depends on the exact composition of the rutile.
- Is rutilated quartz valuable?
- It varies enormously with pattern and clarity. Stones with even, parallel needles in a clear matrix or with particularly striking crisscross patterns are more desirable and command higher prices. Very dense or cloudy inclusions that obscure the quartz reduce value. Generally it is more affordable than precious gems but can be quite pricey in exceptional pieces.
- What does rutilated quartz symbolise?
- It is often associated with amplified intention, clarity of thought and spiritual insight, with the golden needles sometimes described as angel hair or Venus hair. Many people wear it as a stone of awareness and mental focus, though its appeal as a decorative piece stands entirely on its own.
