How much does a 3 carat oval lab-grown diamond cost?
A 3 carat oval lab-grown diamond costs about $2,830 to $6,440 as a loose stone in Australia, with a median of $3,903. That is the middle 80% of the 25 oval stones between 3.00 and 3.09 carats on our live feed on 17 September 2026. Every stone is D to F colour, VS1 clarity or better, and IGI certified.
Set in a finished engagement ring, a 3 carat oval costs $6,900 to $7,900 in 18k gold, or $6,950 to $8,050 in platinum. Those are the fixed prices of our eleven complete 3 carat oval rings, each made with a 3.00 to 3.09ct, E to F colour, VVS1 clarity centre stone.
What a 3 carat oval costs by carat weight
| Carat weight | Stones | Price range | Median price | Typical size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.80 to 2.89ct | 9 | $2,584 to $8,481 | $4,755 | 11.2 x 8.0mm |
| 2.90 to 2.99ct | 20 | $2,757 to $4,243 | $3,237 | 11.5 x 8.1mm |
| 3.00 to 3.09ct | 25 | $2,776 to $6,681 | $3,903 | 11.7 x 8.2mm |
| 3.10 to 3.19ct | 2 | $3,294 to $5,865 | $4,580 | 11.7 x 8.3mm |
| 3.30 to 3.49ct | 5 | $3,637 to $5,068 | $4,158 | 12.5 x 8.5mm |
1 stone listed at more than twice the median for its group is left out of the price ranges, because it is priced far above stones of the same weight and grade.
A 3 carat oval faces up at about 11.7mm by 8.2mm. The biggest saving sits just below it: the 20 ovals between 2.90 and 2.99ct, most of them at exactly 2.97ct, had a median of $3,237. That is about $670 less than the 3 carat group, 17% off, for a stone 0.2mm shorter. Price per carat dropped from $1,276 to $1,083.
Why an exact 3 carat oval costs more
| Carat weight | VS1 median | VVS2 median | VVS1 median |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.90 to 2.99ct | $2,778 (8 stones) | $3,347 (12 stones) | None listed |
| 3.00 to 3.09ct | $3,451 (7 stones) | $3,256 (6 stones) | $5,192 (12 stones) |
| 3.10 to 3.19ct | None listed | $3,294 (1 stone) | $5,865 (1 stone) |
| 3.30 to 3.49ct | $3,837 (3 stones) | $5,068 (1 stone) | $8,718 (1 stone) |
At VS1, the step from just under to just over 3 carats added about $670, or 24%. At VVS2 there was no premium. No VVS1 ovals were listed just under 3 carats, so there was nothing to compare at that grade. If VS1 suits you, a 2.97ct oval is the clearest saving at this size.
Where the money goes at 3 carats: clarity and colour
| Clarity at 3.00 to 3.09ct | Stones | Price range | Median price |
|---|---|---|---|
| VS1 | 7 | $2,784 to $6,681 | $3,451 |
| VVS2 | 6 | $2,776 to $3,893 | $3,256 |
| VVS1 | 12 | $3,705 to $6,676 | $5,192 |
At 3 carats the top grades cost far more than at 2. VVS1 ovals had a median of $5,192, almost $1,940 above VVS2. Colour did the same: D colour had a median of $5,850, E $4,600 and F $3,801. A 3 carat oval is large enough that people look closely, but VS1 and VVS2 ovals still read clean to the eye, and F colour stays white.
Does the oval outline change the price?
Most 3 carat ovals sat at a ratio of 1.40 to 1.45. The 1.45 stones had the lower median at $3,534, against $4,246 at 1.40, so the slightly longer outline was both cheaper and a little bigger looking. As with any oval, check the bow tie in a video: at this size a strong dark band is easy to see.
