Is It Safe to Buy an Engagement Ring Online in Australia?

Yes, when you can confirm who you are buying from, pay in a way that protects you, and understand the returns policy before you pay. The risks are real but specific: fake stores that take payment and send nothing, overseas sellers that are hard to hold to account, and made-to-order rings that jewellers often will not take back if you change your mind.

An engagement ring is one of the more expensive things you can buy online, so it is worth a few extra checks. None of them take long, and most use free government tools.

Start with the business, then the stone. The ACCC's guide to checking a business is genuine warns that registration numbers and badges can be faked, so no single check proves a business is trustworthy, but together they make a fake very hard to sustain.

Scamwatch lists the signs to watch for in buying and selling scams, and several apply directly to jewellery:

• Prices that are far below what other jewellers charge for the same size and quality.
• No ABN, terms and conditions or privacy policy on the website.
• No contact details, or only a contact form.
• A request to pay by bank transfer, money order, gift card, cryptocurrency, or to several different accounts.
• An account name that does not match the business you think you are paying.
• A new social media store with very low prices.

For lab-grown diamonds, prices have fallen so far that a genuine stone is already inexpensive, which makes an impossibly cheap listing easier to spot. Our 1 carat price chart shows what real, IGI-graded stones cost this month.

By credit card or PayPal. Moneysmart says these give you another level of protection if something goes wrong, because your bank may be able to reverse a card payment through a chargeback, and PayPal has its own dispute process. It advises never paying by direct bank deposit, money transfer or cryptocurrency, because money sent that way is rarely recovered.

If you use buy now, pay later, Moneysmart points out that it charges fees rather than interest and that it is easy to lose track of repayments, so check you can afford them. Keep the order confirmation, receipt number and any photos or design files together until the ring has arrived and been checked.

Australian Consumer Law applies to online purchases in the same way it applies in a shop. A ring must match its description, be of acceptable quality and be fit for purpose, and a business cannot sign those rights away with a "no refunds" policy.

What the law does not give you is a refund because you changed your mind. The ACCC says you are not entitled to a repair, replacement or refund if you got what you asked for and changed your mind, found it cheaper elsewhere or decided you did not like it, unless the business has its own change of mind policy. Custom and made-to-order rings often are not covered by one, so the design approval stage matters more than it would for something off the shelf.

Overseas jewellers selling directly to Australians must follow Australian Consumer Law too, but the ACCC warns it can be difficult to get a remedy from an overseas business in practice. If there is a problem, contact the jeweller first, then your state or territory consumer affairs office if it is not resolved. If you paid by card and did not receive what you paid for, ask your bank about a chargeback, and report a suspected scam to Scamwatch.

Five things protect you most once you know the business is real:

2. A video of the actual stone, not a stock image, so you can see its cut and look before you commit.
3. The returns or quality policy in writing, including how long you have to report a problem and whether custom work can be returned.
4. Insured, tracked delivery that needs a signature.

Is it safe to buy a diamond online without seeing it in person?

It can be, if you see a video of the actual stone and verify its grading report with the lab before you pay. Scamwatch's general advice is not to pay for big-ticket items before inspecting them, so for an online diamond the report and a video of that exact stone are the closest equivalent.

Is it safe to buy an engagement ring from a jeweller on Instagram?

Check it the same way as any online store. Look for a website with an ABN, terms, a returns policy and contact details, read reviews away from the jeweller's own social media, and be wary of new accounts with very low prices, which Scamwatch lists as a warning sign.

Can I get a refund if the ring does not fit?

Not automatically. A wrong size you ordered is not a fault under Australian Consumer Law, so it depends on the jeweller's resizing and returns policy. Check what resizing costs and how far the design can be resized before you order.

What if an online jeweller never sends the ring?

Contact the jeweller in writing first. If that fails, contact your bank about a chargeback if you paid by card, follow PayPal's dispute process if you used PayPal, and report the business to your state consumer affairs office and Scamwatch.
