How much does a moissanite engagement ring cost in Australia?
A solid gold moissanite engagement ring costs about $1,300 to more than $5,000 at Australian jewellers, depending on the stone size, metal and design. With us, a round moissanite solitaire in 14k gold costs $1,910 for the look of a 1 carat diamond and $2,650 for the look of a 2 carat diamond. Rings in sterling silver or plated metal can cost a few hundred dollars.
The price has two parts: the moissanite, priced by its size in millimetres, and the setting, priced by the metal, band and design. Every figure on this page is from our own price list on 17 September 2026, and from Australian jewellers' websites on the same day.
What does a moissanite ring cost by size?
This is what a round moissanite costs with us, and the complete ring in a simple four-claw solitaire with a 1.8mm band:
| Round moissanite | Looks like a diamond of | Stone | Ring in 14k gold | Ring in 18k gold | Ring in platinum |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.5mm | About 1 carat | $650 | $1,910 | $2,210 | $2,260 |
| 7.5mm | About 1.5 carats | $1,140 | $2,400 | $2,700 | $2,750 |
| 8mm | About 2 carats | $1,390 | $2,650 | $2,950 | $3,000 |
| 9.5mm | About 3 carats | $2,220 | $3,480 | $3,780 | $3,830 |
| 11mm | About 5 carats | $3,110 | $4,370 | $4,670 | $4,720 |
The size comparison uses the median weight of the round lab-grown diamonds of the same diameter on our stone feed, so "about 2 carats" means a diamond of that size weighs about 1.97 carats.
Other shapes follow the same pattern. The stone alone ranges like this:
| Shape | Smallest stone | Largest stone |
|---|---|---|
| Round | $650 (6.5mm) | $3,110 (11mm) |
| Oval | $550 (7 x 5mm) | $3,690 (14 x 10mm) |
| Emerald | $800 (7 x 5mm) | $2,920 (11 x 9mm) |
| Pear | $690 (8 x 5mm) | $2,800 (13 x 9mm) |
| Marquise | $670 (10 x 5mm) | $2,820 (17 x 8.5mm) |
| Princess | $600 (5.5mm) | $2,790 (9.5mm) |
| Radiant | $670 (7 x 5mm) | $2,860 (11 x 9mm) |
| Cushion | $670 (7 x 5mm) | $2,830 (11 x 9mm) |
Why is moissanite sold by millimetres instead of carats?
Because moissanite is lighter than diamond. GIA measured its specific gravity at 3.22, against 3.52 for diamond, so a moissanite of the same size weighs less. A 1 carat moissanite is a smaller stone than a 1 carat diamond, which is why jewellers quote the millimetre size, or a "diamond equivalent" carat weight, rather than the stone's true weight.
When you compare prices between jewellers, compare the millimetre size. A ring listed as "2 carat moissanite" can mean different sizes at different jewellers.
How much does a moissanite ring cost compared with a lab-grown diamond?
The moissanite costs about half as much as a lab-grown diamond of the same size, and the saving in dollars is largest on big stones. These are the same setting in 14k gold with a round moissanite, and with the median lab-grown diamond of the same diameter from our feed, all IGI certified, D to F colour and VS1 clarity or better:
| Round size | Lab-grown diamond weight | Moissanite ring | Lab-grown diamond ring | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.5mm | 1.02 ct | $1,910 | $2,549 | $639 |
| 7.5mm | 1.53 ct | $2,400 | $3,733 | $1,333 |
| 8mm | 1.97 ct | $2,650 | $3,760 | $1,110 |
| 9.5mm | 3.04 ct | $3,480 | $4,672 | $1,192 |
| 10mm | 3.77 ct | $3,830 | $6,419 | $2,589 |
| 11mm | 5.00 ct | $4,370 | $7,976 | $3,606 |
At 6.5mm the moissanite ring saves $639. At 11mm, a lab-grown diamond of about 5 carats, it saves $3,606. The setting costs the same either way, so on a small ring the stone is a smaller share of the total and the saving looks smaller in percentage terms.
Price is not the only difference. GIA notes moissanite has more than twice the fire of diamond, so it throws more rainbow colour, and it is 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale against diamond's 10. Our moissanite vs lab-grown diamond comparison covers how they look side by side.
What do other Australian jewellers charge for moissanite rings?
These are the starting prices each jeweller showed on its website on 17 September 2026. A starting price usually means the smallest stone and cheapest metal a design comes in, and jewellers do not all define it the same way, so check the stone size and metal before comparing.
| Jeweller | What the listing shows | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Diamonds Factory | Starting prices on the first page of results, most marked as on sale | From $1,300 to $4,530 |
| Moissanite Engagement Rings Australia | Its own summary of what its rings cost | From AU$1,350, most between $2,000 and $3,500 with a 1.5 to 2 carat stone |
| Lily Dia | Complete rings built on this page, round moissanite in 14k gold | $1,910 at 6.5mm, $2,650 at 8mm |
| Moi Moi | Starting prices on the first page of results | From $2,340 to $4,530 |
| Cullen Jewellery | Starting prices on the first page of results, mostly with a 2 carat oval moissanite | From $3,820 to $5,240 |
Cullen lists most of its designs with a 2 carat oval, so its starting prices already include a larger stone than most of the others. Prices change, so check each site before you buy.
What changes the price of a moissanite ring?
- The stone size. On round moissanite, going from 6.5mm to 8mm adds $740, and from 8mm to 9.5mm adds $830.
- The metal. In our solitaire, 18k gold adds $300 over 14k, and platinum adds $350. Sterling silver and gold plating cost far less but wear through and bend more easily, so they suit fashion rings better than a ring worn every day.
- The band. A 2mm band adds $100 over 1.8mm, 2.5mm adds $300 and 3mm adds $500 in the same setting.
- The design. A cathedral setting, hidden halo, halo or pavé band adds metal, labour and small side stones.
- The stone quality. GIA says moissanite can be colourless to near colourless and its value often depends on how colourless it is.
Why are some moissanite rings only a few hundred dollars?
Many of those listings are sterling silver or gold plated rather than solid gold, and some list the stone by a diamond equivalent carat weight that does not match its millimetre size. A solid gold ring made to order costs more because of the gold alone: in our solitaire the 14k gold setting is $1,260 before any stone. If a listing is very cheap, check the metal, the stone's millimetre size and whether the ring is solid gold before comparing it with a jeweller's price.
Common questions
How much is a 2 carat moissanite engagement ring in Australia?
About $2,650 for an 8mm round moissanite in a 14k gold solitaire with us, or $2,950 in 18k gold. Jewellers' starting prices for a 2 carat look range from about $2,000 to over $4,000, depending on the metal and design.
Is moissanite cheaper than a lab-grown diamond?
Yes. At the same size in the same setting, the moissanite ring cost $1,110 less at 8mm and $3,606 less at 11mm on 17 September 2026. Lab-grown diamond prices have fallen for years, so the gap is smaller than it once was, but moissanite is still the cheaper stone.
How much does a 1 carat moissanite ring cost?
A 6.5mm round moissanite, the size of a 1 carat diamond, costs $650 as a loose stone with us, and about $1,910 as a complete 14k gold solitaire.
Does moissanite hold its value?
No. Like most jewellery, a moissanite ring resells for much less than you paid, so buy it because you love it, not as an investment.
