Travelling With an Engagement Ring

Quick answer
Keep the ring on you or in your carry-on, never in checked luggage. It goes through airport screening like any jewellery, and you can ask for a private search. You don’t need to declare it when you bring it home to Australia, unless you claimed a GST refund on it through the Tourist Refund Scheme. Carry it in a flat pouch rather than its box, and check that your insurance covers it overseas before you fly.
Can you take an engagement ring through airport security?
Yes. Wear it or keep it in your carry-on, and keep it with you the whole way. The US Transportation Security Administration, for example, allows jewellery in carry-on and checked bags, asks travellers to keep valuables with them rather than in checked baggage, and lets you ask an officer to screen you and your valuables in private.
If your bag is pulled aside for a search, ask quietly for that private screening, so the ring doesn’t come out in front of your partner.
Should the ring go in carry-on or checked luggage?
Carry-on, always. A checked bag can be delayed, lost or opened out of your sight, and airport security’s own advice is to keep jewellery out of it.
Before you fly, check that your insurance covers the ring away from home and overseas. Our engagement ring insurance guide compares how the main Australian policies cover jewellery overseas.
Do you need to declare an engagement ring at customs?
Not to bring it home to Australia, unless you claimed a GST refund on it through the Tourist Refund Scheme when you left. The Australian Border Force applies its duty-free limits to goods bought overseas or bought duty or tax free, and says goods you claimed a Tourist Refund Scheme refund on must be declared at question 3 of your incoming passenger card (checked 28 October 2026). A ring you bought in Australia and paid GST on is neither.
Each country sets its own rules for what you bring in. Smartraveller has the travel advice for your destination, including its entry requirements, so check it before you fly.
What paperwork should you carry?
Photos of the tax invoice and the IGI report on your phone, and your insurance policy details. Keep the originals at home.
These are the papers every ring comes with from us: the tax invoice describing the ring, the IGI report for a lab-grown diamond centre stone and, for a custom ring, the approved 3D design. Together they describe the ring if you need to make a claim. If your insurer asks for a valuation as well, a registered valuer can provide one, as our insurance guide explains.
Where can you hide the ring from your partner?
Somewhere only you unpack. A flat pouch hides the shape better than a box: tuck it inside a sock in your carry-on, or in a toiletry bag you carry yourself. Avoid the suitcase you share and any pocket your partner might reach into at security.
Your ring arrives in a presentation box. Carry the ring in a pouch, pack the box separately in your carry-on, and put the ring back in the box before the moment.

How early should you order the ring before the trip?
At least two months ahead. We send a 3D design within a week of your order and make your ring in 4 to 6 weeks from design approval, so allow 6 to 8 weeks from your first conversation, plus time for any changes to the design. Delivery is free and insured anywhere in Australia.
Tell us your travel date when you book, and we’ll plan the design and making around it.
Should you wear your engagement ring while travelling?
Yes, on the plane and around town. Take it off to swim, at the gym and before sunscreen: cold water shrinks your fingers, so a ring slips off more easily, and sunscreen leaves a film on the stone. Our engagement ring care guide lists when to take it off, and when not to wear a diamond ring covers the rest.
How should you store your ring at home and away?
In its own pouch or a lined compartment, apart from your other rings, so the diamond and claws don’t scratch the band beside them. Overnight, use a ring dish by the bed rather than the bathroom bench, and never leave it beside a sink, where it can slip down the drain.
In a hotel, keep it on your hand or in the room safe, never in a bag left in the room.
