How wide is a thick band engagement ring?

Our thick band is 3mm wide, the widest of the four widths we make, which run 1.8mm, 2mm, 2.5mm and 3mm in 14k gold, 18k gold and platinum. If you want a band with presence that still lets the stone lead, 2.5mm sits between it and our standard 2mm. Our band width guide shows all four side by side.

Is a 3mm band too thick for an engagement ring?

Does a thick band make the diamond look smaller?

It can with a smaller stone, because the eye reads the stone against the metal beside it. As a guide, the centre stone should be about two and a half times the band width to lead, which over a 3mm band means about 8mm of stone, or 2 carats and up in a round.

Yes. Each step wider uses more metal, so every ring in this collection costs the most at 3mm, and the price on each card is its starting setting price at that width.

Do I need a different ring size for a wide band?

Accepted Answer

Often a little larger. A wide band covers more of the finger, so it fits more snugly at the same measured size, and many people go up a quarter to half a size moving from 2mm to 3mm. Measure with our ring size chart and tell us you have chosen 3mm when you confirm your size.

A band of the same width, since two rings within about 0.3mm of each other stack most cleanly, so a 3mm engagement ring pairs with a 3mm wedding band. Not in the builder. Our pavé band is cut for the 2mm band, which is why our pavé settings are not in this collection. If you want small diamonds on a wider band, ask us about a custom design.

Not always. Each design is photographed on one band width, so the band in a photo can look slimmer than the ring you order. Open a ring and it starts at 3mm with its 3mm price, and the band width comparison above shows how 3mm looks beside the other widths.
