Oxygen plays two main roles in a jewellery workshop. First, it is used as part of fuel-gas torch systems, where mixing oxygen with propane or acetylene creates a much hotter, more precise flame than air-gas torches can produce, giving jewellers the heat needed for soldering, casting and annealing. Second, oxygen in the atmosphere reacts with metals during heating to form surface oxides and fire scale, which the jeweller then has to remove with pickle solution before finishing a piece.
