What wedding band goes best with an oval engagement ring?
A plain straight band is the easy match for an oval set high on prongs, because the stone's rounded ends sit above the band line and the band can slide right up underneath. An oval set low, in a bezel or inside a halo brings metal or diamonds down to the band's height, so it needs a curved band that follows the outline, or a small gap you are happy to live with. The setting on your oval engagement ring decides which of these works, so check it from the side before you choose.
Will a straight wedding band sit flush with an oval?
It will on most high-set solitaires. Unlike a pear, an oval is rounded at both ends, so whichever side you wear the band on it meets the same soft curve, and on a high setting that curve clears the band completely.
The high setting on the left leaves room under the stone for a straight band, while the low setting on the right brings the basket down to the band line, and a straight band will stop short of it. A hidden halo is the one setting where the shape of the band matters less than what it is made of, because its small diamonds sit low on the basket, and a thin plain band between them and a diamond band stops the two rubbing and wearing the claws.
Should the wedding band have diamonds?
That comes down to the look you want. A plain band keeps the attention on the oval, while a diamond band adds sparkle along the finger, and a band of small ovals set end to end repeats the shape of the centre stone. If the band has diamonds and your engagement ring has a halo or side stones, choose a band that will sit with a little clearance, so the two sets of stones aren't grinding against each other every day.
