Oval vs Elongated Cushion: How They Differ and Which to Choose

The corners are the difference. An oval curves smoothly all the way round with no corners at all, while an elongated cushion is a rectangle with softly rounded corners and gently curved sides, a little like a pillow. The oval reads sleek and modern on the hand, and the cushion reads softer, with more of a vintage feel.

The facets differ too. An oval is cut as a brilliant, with the same bright, even sparkle every time, while a cushion can be cut with broad, chunky facets or with a fine crushed ice pattern, and the two look quite different. Our cushion cut diamond guide shows them side by side.

We compared the median measurements of every lab-grown oval and elongated cushion in our builder on 28 September 2026, 818 ovals and 352 cushions with a length-to-width ratio of 1.10 or more, which is where our builder starts an elongated cushion, taking 1.00 to 1.09 carats as 1 carat, and so on:

The oval is 1.5 to 1.6 mm longer and a little wider at every size, because a cushion's outline fills out into its corners, so the same weight sits in a shorter stone. The median oval has a ratio of about 1.4 and the median elongated cushion about 1.25, so the cushion is also the less stretched of the two.

At 1 and 1.5 carats the two are within about A$60 of each other, and from 2 carats the oval pulls ahead on price, by A$343 at 2 carats. Only 13 elongated cushions sat in the 3 carat range that day, so treat that last row as a rough guide. Colour and clarity move the price more than the shape, so compare the exact stones you like in the ring builder.

It depends on the cushion. An oval's brilliant facets give a bright, even sparkle, with the soft bow tie that every oval has at least a little of. A cushion with chunky facets gives bigger, slower flashes of light, and a crushed ice cushion gives a fine glitter that some people love and others find busy, so look at the stone's 360 video before you decide, and every stone in our builder has one.

An oval looks longer and more streamlined, and it lengthens the finger more than an elongated cushion does. An elongated cushion covers a little more width for its length and has a softer, squarer outline, which suits a hand where you want the stone to sit wider.
