How thin is a thin band engagement ring?

Our thin band is 1.8mm wide, the slimmest of the four widths we make, which run 1.8mm, 2mm, 2.5mm and 3mm in 14k gold, 18k gold and platinum. It keeps enough metal to hold its shape through years of daily wear, and our band width guide shows all four widths side by side.

Is a 1.8mm band too thin for an engagement ring?

No. 1.8mm is the safe floor for a gold band you wear every day, and platinum holds a thin profile even longer. Go thinner and gold starts to give way, so a 1.5mm band slowly bends out of round with normal wear, which is why our range starts at 1.8mm. Read is a 1.8mm band too thin and is a 1.5mm band too thin for the detail.

Does a thin band make the diamond look bigger?

Yes. With less metal beside it, the centre stone fills more of the ring, so a 1 carat stone on a 1.8mm band reads larger than the same stone on a 3mm band. Four claws rather than six add to the effect, because they cover less of the stone. More in does a thinner band make a diamond look bigger .

Is a thin band cheaper than a wider one?

Yes, a little. The 1.8mm band uses the least metal, so it is the lowest price for every ring in this collection, and each step wider adds to the price you see when you choose it.

When is a wider band the better choice?

Step up to 2mm or 2.5mm if your centre stone is over 1.5 carats, if your hands take knocks all day at work, or if you want a pavé band, which needs our 2mm band to hold its small diamonds. That is also why our pavé settings are not in this collection. You can change the width on any ring here before you order.

Will a wedding band sit well next to a thin engagement ring?

Yes. A wedding band at the same 1.8mm width sits in proportion beside it, and we make custom wedding bands shaped to sit flush against your engagement ring, whether you design both together or add the band later.

How do I order a thin band engagement ring?

Choose your metal and your centre stone, lab-grown diamond or moissanite, and you can still switch to 2mm, 2.5mm or 3mm at any point before you order. The price on each ring is its starting setting price at 1.8mm, and your final price depends on the metal and stone you choose.

How thin is a 1.8mm band?

1.8mm is the slimmest band we set an engagement ring on, and slim enough that the centre stone becomes the widest thing on your finger. It keeps enough metal to stay round through years of wear, which a 1.5mm gold band does not, so you get the delicate look without needing the band rebuilt a few years in.
