What is an ideal cut diamond?

“Ideal cut” needs context: different grading systems and sellers use the term differently. The AGS Ideal report now offered by GIA is a supplemental light-performance assessment for qualifying diamonds. It is distinct from GIA’s overall cut grade. A GIA Excellent grade, or a hearts-and-arrows pattern alone, does not automatically establish AGS Ideal light performance.

- Is ideal cut the same as excellent cut?
- No. GIA Excellent is an overall cut grade under GIA’s system. The AGS Ideal report uses a separate light-performance assessment. Ask which system supports the claim and check the actual report rather than treating the labels as synonyms.
- What are hearts and arrows in a diamond?
- They are reflection patterns visible in some precisely arranged round brilliant diamonds under a suitable viewer. They can indicate optical precision, but do not by themselves establish overall light performance or guarantee a particular cut grade.
- Does an ideal cut make a diamond look bigger?
- The label does not determine dimensions. Compare millimetre measurements for visible size and inspect brightness separately. Neither equal carat weight nor an “ideal” description guarantees that one diamond will look larger than another.
