How Long Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Last? Do They Last Forever?

A lab-grown diamond lasts forever in every sense that matters. It is pure crystallised carbon, rated 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, and nothing in a human lifetime of wear degrades it. How long do lab-grown diamonds last?

Forever, for any practical definition of the word. A lab-grown diamond is pure crystallised carbon, chemically identical to a mined diamond, and it sits at 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, the hardest material found in nature. Nothing a hand meets in a lifetime of wear scratches it, fades it, dissolves it or wears it down. Mined diamonds are between one and three billion years old and still cut, polish and sparkle perfectly. A lab-grown diamond is the same crystal, so it has the same lifespan: longer than you, your grandchildren, and the ring it sits in.

The honest caveat is that "the diamond" and "the ring" are not the same object. The stone has no expiry date. The prong tips, the rhodium plating on white gold, and the band all wear at human timescales and need maintenance along the way. Do lab-grown diamonds last forever?

Yes, in every sense that matters to a person wearing one. Diamond is carbon locked in the most tightly bonded crystal structure known, and at everyday temperatures that structure is effectively permanent. There is a piece of chemistry trivia worth knowing here: graphite, not diamond, is carbon's stable form, so in theory every diamond is slowly converting to pencil lead. In practice the conversion needs sustained temperatures above roughly 1,700°C to happen at any observable rate. At room temperature the timescale is longer than the current age of the universe. Your diamond will outlast the sun before it turns into graphite.

That permanence does not depend on origin. A diamond grown in a chamber over a few weeks and a diamond formed under the earth over a billion years are the same material with the same bonds. Neither one ages.

Do lab-grown diamonds degrade, fade or wear down over time?

No. The stone does not oxidise, absorb anything, yellow, or lose its polish through normal wear. Sunlight does nothing to it, water does nothing to it, and chlorine, sunscreen and hand sanitiser do nothing to it. A lab-grown diamond worn daily for fifty years shows no measurable facet wear, because almost nothing it will ever touch is hard enough to mark it.

What does change on a timescale you will notice is everything around the stone:

  • Prong tips thin slowly against fabric, benchtops and gym equipment. Expect a jeweller to recommend re-tipping somewhere between year 5 and year 10 of daily wear, earlier for an active wearer. Catching this early is cheap; catching it after a stone loosens is not.
  • Rhodium plating on white gold wears through in roughly 1 to 3 years of daily wear and needs re-plating to stay bright white.
  • Yellow and rose gold pick up a satin haze of micro-scratches that polishes out whenever you want the mirror back.
  • The band can thin or go out of round over decades, especially thinner bands on hardworking hands.

None of this is a lab-grown weakness. A mined diamond ring wears in exactly the same places at exactly the same rate.

Can a lab-grown diamond break or chip?

Yes, and this is the one real risk to be aware of, because hardness and toughness are different properties. Hardness is resistance to scratching, where diamond is unbeatable. Toughness is resistance to breaking, and diamond has cleavage planes, directions along which a sharp knock can split the crystal. A hard strike on the girdle (the thin edge around the widest part of the stone) or a blow landing on an exposed corner can chip any diamond, lab-grown or mined.

The realistic risk is low but not zero. The way to manage it is with the setting, not the stone:

  • A bezel or six-claw setting shields the girdle better than four thin claws.
  • Shapes with points, like pear, princess and marquise, should have those points protected by claws sitting directly over them.
  • Take the ring off for lifting, gardening and anything involving impact. Nearly every chipped stone we see traces back to one specific knock, not gradual wear.

Do lab-grown diamonds last as long as natural diamonds?

Yes, exactly as long, because they are the same material. Identical hardness, identical toughness, identical chemical stability, identical optical behaviour. The grading labs measure lab-grown and mined stones with the same instruments against the same scales, and no test of durability separates them. Whatever lifespan you would credit a mined diamond, the lab-grown version has the same one.

The differences between the two are origin and price, not performance. If a jeweller implies a lab-grown stone will wear out sooner, they are selling, not describing.

How long do lab-grown diamonds last compared to moissanite and cubic zirconia?

This is where lifespans genuinely diverge, and it is the comparison behind most of the worry:

  • Lab-grown diamond: indefinite. Mohs 10, non-porous, chemically inert. Never clouds internally, never yellows.
  • Moissanite: indefinite. Silicon carbide at 9.25 on the Mohs scale, also non-porous and stable. It holds up for decades of daily wear; we looked at the evidence in moissanite after 5 years.
  • Cubic zirconia: roughly 2 to 5 years of daily wear. CZ is softer (8 to 8.5), slightly porous, and absorbs oils over time, so it goes permanently hazy from the inside and its facet edges round off. This is the stone that created the "fake diamonds cloud up" reputation.

How long does a lab-grown diamond take to grow?

Two to eight weeks for most gem-quality stones, depending on the method and the finished size. HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) growth typically produces a rough crystal in a few weeks. CVD (chemical vapour deposition) builds the diamond in thin layers over a similar window, with larger stones taking longer. After growth, cutting and polishing add another few weeks before the stone is ready to set.

The speed changes nothing about the result. Growth time affects the price, not the permanence: a crystal that took three weeks to form is bonded exactly like one that took a billion years.

Will a lab-grown diamond last as an heirloom?

Physically, yes, without question. The stone your daughter inherits will be optically identical to the one you wore, and it can be re-cut, re-polished or re-set into a new ring generations from now, exactly as estate diamonds are today. Keep the grading certificate (IGI or GIA) with your ring paperwork, because it travels with the stone and makes any future insurance, resale or remodelling simpler.

Worth separating from that: lasting and holding resale value are different questions. Lab-grown prices have fallen as production has scaled, so a lab diamond is a poor investment vehicle and a very good thing to actually wear. If the plan is to keep it, wear it and pass it on, none of that matters, and the heirloom case is as strong as it is for any diamond.

What actually decides how long the ring lasts

The maintenance routine, and it is short:

  2. Annual professional inspection. A jeweller checks prong tension, spots thinning tips, and deep-cleans the setting. Ten minutes a year catches almost every problem while it is still small.
  3. Take it off for impact. Gym, gardening, renovating. Knocks are the only realistic threat to the stone and the biggest threat to the metal.
